The New, Post-Transition Kossuth Radio Launches With Nonstop Radio Dramas
At midnight today, Kossuth Radio relaunched; during the transitional period, radio dramas will carry heightened importance, much like the film-filled launch of the M1 channel.
The first radio drama to air after the midnight announcement was "A test angyala" ("The Angel of the Body") by Sárbogárdi Jolán (Parti Nagy Lajos), a multiple-award-winning 1990 radio drama. The announcement went as follows:
"What you could not hear for the past 16 years. All day long, radio dramas placed on a banned list can be heard on Kossuth. On the Kossuth Radio frequency, Kossuth's programming is on air again, but with a changed schedule, with radio dramas.
We are broadcasting works that could not be aired over the past 16 years, because either the authors or the creators of the radio dramas were undesirable in the government's cultural policy. Hungarian writers, directors, dramaturgs and actors could not reach the Hungarian audience. Hungarian radio thus failed to fulfil its legal duty to sustain national culture and identity.
National culture, along with credible information, was placed on a banned list after 2010. On the renewed Kossuth Radio, quality criteria will replace banned lists. Beyond the previously banned pieces, listeners will also be able to hear legendary radio dramas, life-story interviews and documentary dramas at any time of day.
Until Kossuth's fully renewed schedule launches, the timing of the news — except the noon bulletin — will follow the length of the radio dramas. We will keep you informed about the works in the electronic programme guide at mediaklikk.hu. (…) Listen, even from midnight to midnight, to the censored-out radio dramas."
