Radio-drama marathon on Hungary’s flagship public station — the international response
There was zero international response to the fact that, as part of the overhaul of MTVA, Kossuth Radio has been broadcasting radio dramas all day since 15 July. The world's press covered the restructuring of Hungarian public media, including the Bartók episode, but the switch in the second week was no longer newsworthy. We went through the coverage of the leading foreign papers and found none that reported the radio-drama turn — except that the news agency of Radio Romania carried MTVA's statement.
Hungarian public media went off air on 7 July 2026; for a week the Kossuth Radio frequency carried the classical output of Bartók Radio. At midnight on 15 July, Kossuth returned with radio dramas, documentary dramas and related archive interview programmes alone — works that, according to MTVA's statement, had not been broadcast for sixteen years. In terms of radio drama and documentary drama this is an extraordinary situation: the flagship station of a national public radio service became a non-stop audio-drama channel. It could be taken to show that radio drama really is the most durable form, and a central part of what a public radio service does in a nation's cultural life. It is a temporary state of affairs, but its very singularity — indeed, its lack of precedent — might have made it newsworthy. That it does not clear the world press's threshold of attention is, all the same, worth thinking about.
The international press wrote about the 7 July shutdown. At that point nearly all of them carried the same single line about Kossuth Radio: classical music is playing instead of the news.
In the second week, two of the outlets we surveyed returned to the appearance of the radio dramas. Kulturnytt, the arts news desk of Swedish public radio (Sveriges Radio), reported the relaunch on the evening of 15 July, where it writes of 'cultural works' (not radio plays). The other was Rador, the news agency of Radio Romania, which carried the story in detail — translating into Romanian the material from Inforádió, which is itself an almost verbatim rendering of MTVA's announcement. That item, however, was — on the evidence of our search — picked up by no Romanian paper at all.
And yet MTI carried the news in detail even in its English-language service, under the headline 'Kossuth Radio to return to air with legendary radio plays from Wed' — nobody picked it up.
The audio-drama profession did not notice it either. We reviewed the content of twenty-five specialist radio-drama sites — and found no Hungarian reference in any of them.
In the Hungarian-language press beyond Hungary's borders, six outlets ran the story: Krónika, Székelyhon, Aradi Hírek, Magyar Szó, Vajdaság MA and Pannon RTV. All six carried the MTI item. Not one newsroom sought comment from a local radio or theatre professional, and none raised their own region's radio-theatre tradition — even though the Hungarian-language radio in Târgu Mureș, Slovakia's Pátria Rádió and Novi Sad radio all produce audio drama; indeed, the Târgu Mureș station was for years the 'refuge' where writers and directors barred from MTVA regularly had a voice.
