Dionysus Descends Into the Underworld, Accompanied by Polish Black Metal

Radio Kraków has begun recording a one-of-a-kind radio drama titled "Νόστοι. Powroty" ("Returns"), which reworks the Greek myth of Dionysus's descent into the underworld, with music by Michał Kosma Kuźniak — better known as Nihil, frontman of the black metal band Furia.

According to the broadcaster's own description, the piece is "a story from the borderline of worlds," created jointly by a musician-composer and a theater scholar: the musical material is credited to Kuźniak, while the concept and dramaturgical work is credited to theatrologist Dominik Gac, co-founder of several music groups. The production's unusual pairing — ancient Greek mythology combined with the soundscape of one of Poland's leading extreme-metal figures — is a rare crossover for the radio drama genre.

Radio Kraków's announcement so far only confirms that recording has begun; no premiere date has been announced. The drama is expected to air in the station's "słuchowisko" (radio drama) strand once recording is complete.
