How to Be Polish and Pay Little for It

The radio play "Jak być Polakiem i niedrogo za to zapłacić" ("How to Be Polish and Pay Little for It"), broadcast on Polish Radio's Dwójka channel, has won the Krzysztof Zaleski Honorary Award at the Dwa Teatry festival in Sopot, after previously taking first place at the Taipei International Comedy Festival.

The piece, which mixes monologues, dialogue and songs, was created by in-house writers of Warsaw's Klub Komediowy (Comedy Club), who have written and performed in the troupe's improvised and scripted shows alike for years; one of them also runs improv training sessions for companies including Sony, Ikea and Mercedes-Benz. The piece originated as a stage production at Klub Komediowy before being adapted into a radio play for Polish Radio 2 (Dwójka) in 2025. The piece explores Polish identity and the contradictions of contemporary Polish life in a humorous, at times lyrical, register, full of absurd associations and wordplay.

At the 25th Dwa Teatry Festival in Sopot, the piece received the Krzysztof Zaleski Honorary Award "for work rejecting stereotypes and easy novelties, rooted in memory and history, addressing contemporary problems." The production had previously won first place at the Taipei International Comedy Festival and the Radgie Award for Most Daring Performance/Behavior at the Besties Awards at the Edinburgh Fringe.
